Time flies when you're having fun!

A lot has happened in the past month and a half! (so sorry for the delay!) The following are a few highlights and photos of our adventures and happenings with Eli:

This is a close up of Eli discovering his hand. He LOVES his hands, so much so that pacifiers just don't cut it, much to his mother's chagrin.

At 6 weeks Eli joined us for a night on the town! He went to his first dinner and a movie in Chinatown with Jenny and Jessie. We thought he'd appreciate a hamburger his size, but he seemed a little disinterested. He was amazing during the movie, and slept the whole time!!

We've learned that being parents is all about multi-tasking. Here Jason blows out his birthday candle while feeding Eli a bottle! My mom was nice enough to babysit while we enjoyed a dinner out. :D

I've noticed that Eli never stops moving! Unless he is asleep, something is twitching, or kicking, or flailing, depending on his mood of course.
Eli's second month birthday was a little quieter than the first. He started sleeping through the night about now, so his mama looks a little more rested. :D
For my 30th birthday we went to a really yummy Italian restaurant. Here we are with Jessie, Brendan, and Millie.

Mr Smiley in full form! It is so much fun to play and get him to smile and squirm!

Here is a last photo of Eli in the Harrington bassinet. He has grown up so quickly!

Eli went on his first boat ride on Memorial Day. It is pretty funny all the places he can take a meal! It was a great day, though he did not sleep through it like I expected.
Eli is so lucky to have such a good uncle and cousin to take care of him. Here Brendan helps Millie hold Eli on Brendan's 10th birthday. Crazy, I remember when Brendan was that small!!
More posts are coming soon to share Eli's baptism and Garza family visits!

Eli and the National Cherry Blossom Festival!

On a cold, misty March day, Eli made his debut at the Cherry Blossom festival! It was surprisingly not crowded due to the cooler temp and call for rain. We took advantage, and got some cute shots of Eli in the blossoms. :D

Eli the smurf up in a tree with the Washington Monument behind him...

Surprisingly, the whole adventure didn't seem to impress him quite as much as expected...

Fun First Photos!

This post has some firsts and otherwise cool photos of Eli. Enjoy!!

These are from his first bath. He was a little puzzled by it, but he didn't mind...

This is on his changing table. He loves to look out of the window, which makes changing diapers a little easier. :)

After 4 weeks, we decided it was time for Daddy to get in on the feeding fun! This is the first of many bottles to come for Jason and Eli.

We had a little party to celebrate Eli's One month birthday! They grow up so fast!!

We had a couple issues with the writing with the cake frosting, and then the candle fell over! (Unlit fortunately!) Eli was gracious enough not to comment...

These are a couple really cute extreme close ups...

(Ann Geddes eat your heart out)

Eli takes a nap in the heirloom family bassinet. This is the bassinet my great-grandfather used as a baby, making it over 100 years old! We will take more photos of him in it soon.

I thought this was just too cute a photo of Ryan and his nephew to leave out! :)

The Roller Coaster of a Lifetime!!

Jason and I are super excited to introduce our new son, Elijah Paul Garza, or Eli for short! :) He was born on March 2nd at 5:00pm, weighed in at an impressive 8lbs, 9oz, and was 21" long! He has an adorable little face, long fingers, and huge paddle feet!! (See photos below!) He is completely healthy now, and is a champion nurser! I can't wait for you all to meet him. We are soo blessed and happy!!

There are several stories to tell from his first week, each one a roller coaster in its own right. First, the photos you’ve all been waiting for:

Eli in recovery room shortly after birth.

Our first family photo less than an hour after birth.

The afore mentioned paddle feet when he was measured for length. We'll have to get a better angle to do them justice. :D

A thoughtful Eli right before going home with us in his first outfit. :)

The welcoming party as we arrive at the hospital room after recovery.

Eli meets his Ooma as she checks on her daughter and grandson!

Eli meets his Granddad...

Millie is extremely excited to hold her new cousin!

Eli and his great-grandpa, and namesake, get to know each other.

Granna and Papa with one of their two new grandbabies!

A tired Daddy and his son. :D

Eli had his first taste of Guiness, with the help of his Mama, on St. Patrick's day, not bad for a week and a day!!

Yes, I'm tired, but I'm going out to get my first Guinness darn it!!

Out and about in Alexandria on the Potomac. The weather is encouraging us to get outside! :)

For those who have asked, below is the birth story, and after that is a short description of the ups and downs of our first week in the hospital. (All of the photos are above.)

The birth story:

Eli arrived 8 days early because a doctor's visit determined that my massive amounts of swelling was indeed becoming preeclampsia, the treatment of which is delivery of the baby. The appointment was on Friday, and we got a call Sunday morning to go to the hospital that evening for an induction the next morning. After a crazy day of preparations, we arrived with birthing ball in tow, took a final photo of my largeness, and tried to get a couple hours sleep. And yes, we did get laughed at by the security guard for walking in with an exercise ball, adding fuel to Jason’s theory that not many people show up bouncing a large rubber ball in the lobby (which he was).

The next morning at 6:00am the induction began. I knew I'd be limited to a 5ft radius near the bed due to continuous monitoring, but I was happy as long as I could be out of the bed and on the ball, etc. After only an hour of moving around, due to high blood pressure I had to stay in the bed to keep it as low as possible. Things continued to progress, and I got to 4cm by noonish, but the baby had not dropped at all.

My doctors had been concerned about the baby’s size as measured on several ultrasounds. He had measured in at the 97th percentile around his torso, which is not good for fitting shoulders safely through my pelvis. Two hours later, not much had changed. I had not dilated further, and he was not dropping. I agreed to try an epidural, hoping that it would help things relax and make progress.

Before administering the epidural, they needed to do a blood test. Two more hours had gone by (it was 4:00 pm by now) when my doctor returned to find me in the same state with no epidural and no blood test results. At this time, I was still at 4 cm, and the baby had not dropped despite pretty active labor. She felt that things were not progressing, I was having a really big baby, and a cesarean was the best option. I agreed, and away we went!

It is amazing how quickly things happened after that! I think from the time they wheeled me out of the room to the birth of our baby took less than 20 minutes. He was born with a very healthy set of lungs at exactly 5:00 pm. :D It took a bit longer to get me stitched up, and then the three of us enjoyed an hour together in the recovery area before going to our room. Our families were waiting for us, and Eli had a happy introduction to all!

The hospital story:

After Eli was born Monday evening, we were in the hospital until Friday afternoon. It was anything but a relaxing recovering time! One thing after another kept us on our toes! Tuesday we had a steady stream of visitors until that evening when the nurses became concerned that Eli’s temperature was elevated. They called the pediatrician, and when the temp did not go down, he was sent to the neonatal intensive care until (NICU) for antibiotics and tests. Newborns should not have temperatures, and they needed to make sure something serious was not the cause. It was really hard to see him hooked up to the machines with an IV.

On Wednesday, Jason and I spent the day going back and forth to feed Eli. It was a good way to get me walking after the cesarean, but it was a sad reason. That night when I went down to feed him at 3:00am, I got the good news that we could bring Eli back to our room! I called Jason to come join us, but he had just thrown up! Eli eventually got back to our room early that morning. Jason continued to throw up every thirty minutes until mid Thursday morning, and he was able to go home to recover from the stomach virus. On Thursday afternoon, Eli was able to come off the antibiotics, and his blood culture came back negative. He had a clean bill of health!

I still had high blood pressure, which should have gotten better after delivery. We were monitored and planned to go home on Friday. They did a blood test on Friday morning and said I could go home even though my blood pressure was still high. We were so excited to take him home!! We happily packed up, and said farewell to Fairfax hospital!

Since then life has gotten better and better as we have all settled in togehter. We did have one more bump when I got Jason’s stomach virus that Saturday night, but with the help of some anti-nausea medicine I got better pretty quickly. Eli continues to thrive, and weighed 10 lbs at his two week check-up! :D

Look for more frequent posts with much fewer words and many more photos!

Ready or not...

Jason and I are in the final countdown to B-day! Our little man is due to arrive on March 10th, or perhaps a little before. So with three weeks and counting, I am sending a test run of our new blog to all of our friends and family. We will update this site often with baby photos and stories of our little boy. You can "follow" the blog, and get updates when new posts are added (see button on right of screen), or you can save this to your favorite web sites, and check-in whenever you like. :)

With a little less than 4 weeks to go, we went in for an ultrasound to check on the baby's size. He has been checking in a bit large all along. So now, weighing in at 8lbs, 5 oz, we have ourselves a BIG boy! The baby and I are perfectly healthy, so nothing to worry about. Jason is hopeful some of this size will result in a little more height than expected... :)

In Texas right before New Years we took some family pics with the Grishams. They were nice enough to capture a few of Jason and I, and my bump.

Look what he did! And I still had over two months to go!

Me and all my largeness!

Baby Shower

The baby shower was a lot of fun! It was amazing to be surrounded by so many of the important women in my life! We played some silly games, and ate some yummy food! Everyone was extremely generous in the gifts we received, thank you!!

Below are a small collection of pics capturing the event!

The hostesses with the mostesses! Three, almost four generations accounted for!!

Two pregnant mamas, and one VERY happy grandmother!!

Beth and Millie did a great job of test driving the baby books we received! They all got the Millie seal of approval!

Is that poop, or chocolate in your diaper?! If only it always smelled this sweet!!

Jessie and Jenny are serious about figuring it out!

Any bets on the amount of toilet paper needed to fit around my belly now?!

Don't be too surprised about the winner of that game, as the sole guy at the party, he had to represent! And he was very excited to do so!

The Boo-boo Bunnies were a big hit, though some had more of a knack for making them than others! :)

And here I am, just getting bigger and bigger every week!!

Thanks again to everyone for making my shower such a special event! We are slowly getting there with the preparations. Now all we need is the baby...
